QUESTION:
Porcelain doll, need help with year?
My great grandmother passed down a porcelain doll she had from when she was younger. It's a beautiful woman and I'm not looking for a value, just on some background behind it. It wouldn't be worth anything for, the coat's been damaged, the foot broke off of it a long long time ago. I'm just curious on when it is from. I don't have money for an appraiser but if you think i should get one I can save up some money. However, here's her features:~No markings at all, no factory burns, etches, anything.
~Peach colored glossy finish.
~Head, legs, hands are porcelain while the body is cloth with a wire frame.
~music box, not sure what the song is.
~ Blonde hair, blue eyes.
~eye lashes are painted, not symmetrical, eyelashes are painted, not symmetrical. Right has more strokes than left.
~tanish colored 'tear duct' effect on eyes.
~She had a blue velvet jacket with buttons
~silkdress with lace ruffles, complete with white pearl beads. lace trim on all three layers. Also silk under 'pants' with lace bottom trim, elastic waist band.
~Dimpled chin small pink lips with red lip liner.
~Also, her hair is glued on and the glue is yellow and it has to be hand done because there are individual curls glued down on the nape of the neck.SO! Yah! =D If you can help with ANYTHING please do!

ANSWER:
From your description it sounds like a modern (late 1970's-80's) porcelain doll marketed to be collectible. You don't mention your Great Grandmother's age, but I would assume that she purchased it in her later years rather than when she was young. Identifying these dolls is very difficult as there were so many made, unless she is marked or has her original tag or box. Check her back and the back of her neck to see if she is marked by the manufacturer or signed by the artist. You can then do a web search for the markings. If not she was probably a generic "Collectible Doll" made in Taiwan. These dolls have very little monetary value, but because she was given to you by someone special she is priceless and you should treasure her.

QUESTION:
Dyeing synthetics to cover mould stains?
I have a vintage corset top I've just rediscovered, that unfornately has developed black mould spots/stains. The top itself is pale pink, and I was hoping dying it red would cover the spots. Its made from a variety of synthetic fibres- the bottom is strong elastic, while the top has has satin-ey pieces and pink and gold lace trim.
Would my dyeing plan work? What dye should I use?
If red wouldnt work, would black? (I want to wear it for Halloween...)
-
ANSWER:
Generally I would recommend Rit dye, but as the previous poster mentioned, synthetics generally will not dye or will not dye well. Plus keeping something with mold on it can be bad for your health. You can usually kill and get rid of the mold. Spray undiluted white distilled vinegar liberally onto the affected areas. Vinegar kills mold. Let it sit for several hours, ideally outside in the sun. Then, use warm, sudsy water with 1/2 cup borax to wash it. Rinse it and let it dry in a clean, dry place.
